Who Is AXIA

Dr Linda buchan axia-asd's director and founder

The Beginning of AXIA

AXIA was founded and is co-directed by Dr Linda Buchan, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with a 40 years of experience in the field of autism and neurodiversity, alongside Co-Director, Calvin Atkinson, Linda's son and self proclaimed Nerd Consultant.

Our model of working is informed by the Partnership Model developed by Professor Hilton Davis and Dr Linda Buchan in the 1980s. This means that parents are viewed as the experts on their children and individuals as experts on themselves.

Our task is to share the mutual expertise that is in the room in the spirit of openness, honesty and genuineness. We do not adopt a deficit model in relation to neurodevelopmental difference but rather focus on the strengths that come with neurodiversity as well as some of the challenges.

What AXIA Means

AXIA is derived from the Greek word ΑΞΙΑ meaning: value, merit, worth. It comes from an old root word linked to balancing scales and how things weigh against each other.

What AXIA Means to Us

Everyone carries something different. At AXIA, we believe every person has value, strengths and a story worth understanding. We bring this old word into the new world.

How We Embody AXIA

This belief has been at the heart of AXIA since 1998. It shapes who we are, how we work and the people who make AXIA today. Every staff member and visitor carries AXIA with them.

The team at AXIA

AXIA's team has a wide range of interests, and we are able to use this to engage and connect with those who visit our clinic, for example, our Anime Amigos.

The team at AXIA

We have a neurodiverse team and we passionately believe in valuing individual’s interests.
