Why Can’t I Just Enjoy Things? – Book Review

Why Can’t I Just Enjoy Things?: A Comedian’s Guide to Autism
Hardcover – 18 July 2024

by Pierre Novellie

Having had the pleasure of attending the Axia PDSG when Pierre was guest speaker, I had looked forward to reading his book. Well it did not disappoint.

I actually borrowed this book but I am going to buy my own copy, because I want to read it again and then know it is on my bookshelf to refer to.

He clearly is a highly intelligent man and has done a tremendous amount of research which he references throughout the book.

But what shines through, is his honesty and his vulnerability along with his awesome sense of humour and self – deprecation.

I found myself relating to so many of Pierre’s observations and experiences.

I think he is an outstanding example of an Autistic adult, successfully going about his life – making it look easy, but at the same time having to be mindful of the danger of burnouts, because we all know that constant masking is not conducive to our mental, physical or emotional health.

I can honestly say it is one of the best books I have ever read on the subject of Autism.
