Minutes of the Thirty Eighth
Post-Diagnostic Support Group
28th August 2019
46 people attended today’s meeting along with Bertie the pug.
Today’s talk was the first part of a presentation on “Social and Personal Relationships” given by Sarah Hendrickx, Autistic Adult and Diagnostician at Axia-ASD.
A very interesting discussion followed on Friendships and Relationships, the main points being that autistic people in the main enjoy being alone but also at times want company, and there is a lack of opportunity for this and understanding.
It was recognised that some social environments cause significant mental exhaustion and anxiety. It was also mentioned that autistic people do find friendships sometimes easier with like minded autistic people. Sometimes autistic people need to see a logic to friendship and the relationship needs to be relevant and useful. It was a good discussion and very thought provoking.
There was a raffle of 6 tickets for the annual autism conference on 11 October 2019 which was well received.
Our next PDSG is on 16th October, and will be Pilates for Autistic Bodies with Karen Manghan, Autistic Adult, Autism Practitioner and Pilates Teacher.
