DWP announces crucial PIP change that could make the claims process quicker and easier for new applicants

The Department for Work and Pensions aims to provide the new service by the end of the year

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit for people aged over 16 and under State Pension age who need additional help with daily living tasks or getting around as a result of a long-term illness, disability or mental health condition.

In August, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) outlined changes it was making to the PIP process which determined the level of financial support awarded to claimants during certain time periods.

These included:

  • Managing medication and monitoring a health condition – changes from 28 November 2016 to 15 March 2017
  • Safety and supervision – changes from 9 March 2017
  • Special diet as therapy – changes from 28 November 2016
  • Overwhelming psychological distress and planning journeys – changes from 28 November 2016
