Different minds, How we can help our Autistic children thrive

As a parent of a neurodivergent child myself, I found this book so helpful and relatable. There were many moments throughout reading the book where I thought yes, this is exactly what is going on! This book explains things that as parents, we struggle to put into words but we know what is going on and we live with the aftermath day in day out.

I would highly recommend this book to other parents with neurodiverse children, teachers/SENCO’s and professionals. It helps everybody to understand what life can feel like for an Autistic child every single day when attending school, and how much stress they go through just to get through the day, which can also lead to physical pain, burnout and meltdowns at the end of each school day. This is so important because they may simply ‘appear to look ok’ on the outside.

The personal experience shared, really hits home and makes you look at it from the child’s perspective. There are so many children at school currently who are struggling and in distress because their needs aren’t being met. The book is helpful because it also  has advice for both parents and teachers which can help so much. A small change can make a huge difference! Pete used to also be a teacher, and he shares his experiences of working in a school and having neurodivergent children himself.

This book has the power to help our neurodivergent children be understood better in school and to challenge the way we think. It really does make me have more determination to get my son, and other children the support they truly need, and the true importance of teachers being truly aware of what is going on for Autistic children.
