NAS: Opportunity to Join Government SEND Consultation Event

It’s important to make sure autistic pupils’ needs are fully understood by the Government. We want to make sure you get a chance to have your say about the Government’s planned changes to SEND provision in schools.

The Department for Education has just announced a series of SEND consultation events, both online and in-person, open to anyone who wants to find out more about the Government’s plans and share their views. There are a limited number of spaces – to find out more and register, click the button below and scroll down to ‘Upcoming events’.

If joining an event isn’t for you, don’t forget that whether you have 10 minutes or longer, you can make your time count with our campaigner toolkit. Reach out to your MP to let them know what you think about SEND reform, answer the consultation using our guidance, or answer our quick survey – we’ll share the results with key decision-makers and include them in our consultation response!

What else we’ve been up to

These reforms are a once in a generation chance to improve education for autistic people. Last week, we met 15 MPs and their staff in Westminster in one-to-one meetings. We spoke about making sure there are strong legal protections for families, and that the reforms are backed by enough funding.

We also held an All-Party Parliamentary Group on Autism (APPGA), attended by Peers, MPs and the Minister for School Standards, Georgia Gould. Gavin, who is autistic, joined us and spoke to the group about his experiences of education, and the change he hopes to see for his children, who are also autistic, so they can learn and be happy at school.
A photo of Gavin with his daughter outside. They are smiling. Over the photo is a quote from Gavin: “I want to see change in the education system so that three-year-old Maia turns out to be the best person she can be.”

During the consultation period and beyond, our team will continue working hard to share your experiences and hopes for the reforms.

Together, we can show the Government how to finally Get SEND Right.
