Minutes of the Twelfth
Post-Diagnostic Support Group
4th May 2016
Today’s group was attended by 42 people.
We were delighted to welcome 42 people to our first meeting in the new Lifestyle Centre. The feedback from many members of the group was that they liked the new venue although some individuals said they preferred the old style building of Crewe Library.
Prior to Dr Luke Beardon’s presentation Linda explained about the rapid expansion of Axia ASD Ltd and full details can be found on our Meet the Team page. As part of this expansion it has become apparent that we need Carly closer to Axia ASD Ltd in Chester and we are very grateful to her and her family for agreeing to move to Chester. We will keep you updated.
Linda explained that Elspeth and she had analysed the comments, suggestions, themes and so on that had emerged at our previous post-diagnostic support group and Linda and Elspeth will be presenting their findings, giving their thoughts on how to structure ongoing post-diagnostic support group sessions at our June group meeting.
Today’s session was led by Dr Luke Beardon, our friend and colleague and we are very grateful to him for giving up his time to come and talk with us.
He used his presentation, Myths about Autism which can be found on our website (here along with the other slide shows) to structure a discussion with the group regarding the Autistic world in the context of a neurotypical world and we discussed many of the myths that sadly are still around about people who are Autistic.
Understanding or adjusting to if there can be no understanding (for example, why people lie) to the neurotypical world is something that Elspeth and Linda, based on what people have said they would like in the support group, will continue to follow this theme in ongoing sessions.
i was very fortunate to be present at this meeting and would like to say a huge thank you to Dr Buchan, Carly and all the team at Axia.
Dr Luke Beardon was a complete inspiration. He covered so much in the two hours, and I do hope that I am able to retain much of the positivity that he made possible.
I can’t find the right words to convey how brilliant and insightful he is.
Together with the Axia team headed by Dr Linda, he is a shining light in what has been a muddy whirlpool.
HUGE thanks.
Thanks to the Axia team and Luke Beard on for a very good first meeting at the new venue which I like very much.
But I felt the gym equipment stored under the windows took up valuable space and wonder if the Library could remove them from the room.
I also thought the table for tea coffee was in the wrong place, again taking up valuable space and think it would be better stored to the right of the presentation screen in the corner. The table that was stored to the Left of the presentation screen seemed to work without getting in the way, just as I think the table in the right hand corner to the screen would work without getting in the way.
Hi Ronnie this is very useful feedback especially with regards to the placing of the table for tea and coffee and I agree it would be better placed to the right of the projector screen in future. Many Thanks, Carly
Hi Carly
Glad you’ve found the feedback very useful.
Looking forward to the next meeting.
Best wishes Ronnie.
