The Dyslexia, ADHD and DCD-Friendly Study Skills Guide – Book Review

The Dyslexia, ADHD and DCD-Friendly Study Skills Guide. Tips and Strategies for Exam Success

by Ann-Marie McNicholas
Publisher: Jessica Kingsley Publishers

Learning how to learn is an integral life skill; but many, especially those who learn differently to the predominant population, struggle to find what works for us.

This book is a great place to discover ways of working with your differently-wired brain, rather than against it. It is targeted at pupils and young people but can be equally as useful for parents or educators, as well as anyone who wants to know how to study and learn more effectively.

Ann-Marie gives lots of practical strategies for learning and revision, giving a variety of tips to trial out. The book includes lots of visual components, activities, and quizzes. It encourages you to reflect on your own learning style, organisation, and time management preferences, as well as offers ways to manage and adjust your environment to be more supportive of your learning.

The book is written in a very positive and reaffirming way and is made to be easily digestible, as the text is broken down in manageable parts and filled with interactive elements.

If I were to choose one main takeaway from this book, it would be a lesson of turning your “I can’t do it” attitude into “I can’t do it… yet” attitude.
