During yesterdays PDSG, a gentleman reminded me of an analogy I’d given with reference to Dr Luke Beardon’s “Autism+Environment=Outcome” equation 9 years ago! So I’m really pleased Ed had not only remembered it, but understood and appreciated it, which I am grateful for. I thought I’d repeat the story here as an individual post in case it may help any others.
I was a printer in a previous life, served my time for 23 years. Following hearing Dr. Beardon’s perspective at Axia’s conference, one of the things he referred to I interpreted as less “me being broken” and more “I’ve been in the wrong environment”. There is absolutely nothing negative with Autism per se, but environmental factors alter how it manifests. It occurred to me recently after finding this old colour swatch that it served as an interesting analogy. The purpose of the “quiz” from the printers point of view was to explain to customers that the paper affected how the ink would look. If I were to think of my Self as “Blue Ink”, then that is what I am. However in this example, on nine different types of paper, nine different hues can be observed from the identically same ink. Ergo – the ink does not change but the environment alters the ink’s appearance.
Click through the slideshow below to see how the paper affects the hue.

Thank you for posting this, Dream, I love your colour swatch analogy! :0)
Thanks Lucy, I really can’t believe it’s nine years ago, but still seems relevant
It certainly is relevant and a really helpful way of thinking about the Golden equation especially for people who think in visual ways
